Highlights of Carew's Last GCIT Professional Advising Activity: Growth Mindset and Career Journey

Rick Carew, from the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce and a visiting scholar at the International College of Innovation, NCCU, concluded his series of professional advising meetings with GCIT students on December 6. Carew shared valuable insights during the final session, focusing on career planning and professional development.

Drawing from his own experiences, Carew provided practical career advice to nearly 20 GCIT students and motivated them to use the program's resources to unlock opportunities in their chosen fields. Reflecting on his journey, Carew shared how conversations with his college professors influenced his path in journalism. He highlighted the importance of building connections and encouraged students to adopt a growth mindset and be adventurous. He wanted to pass on his support to help more students succeed in their careers. With a growth mindset, Carew said, there is no such thing as failure. Instead, it is an opportunity to progress and improve continuously. Therefore, do not be afraid to make mistakes.

In response to students' concerns about finding internships, Carew advised them to thoroughly research the industries of their interests, explore diverse options, and treat the job search as an additional learning opportunity. He concluded that spending time on research, gathering information, and practicing promoting oneself can sharpen skills and contribute to achieving career goals.

In addition to being a professional advisor to GCIT students, Carew is currently teaching a course, "Global Digital Divide: Big Tech, Inequality, and Polarization," which has been well-received among students.
